Other Local Areas
In addition to the spaces on our school grounds, we are fortunate to have many other local outdoor spaces that can serve as our classroom.
Blackhawk Lake: Blackhawk Lake has served as a great outdoor learning space for Highland students. Students have gone here to do water quality testing with the DNR, fishing and ice fishing with volunteers from Trout Unlimited, dip netting, and have learned about invasive species in the area. We are grateful to the Blackhawk Lake staff who have gone above and beyond to provide us with materials and resources, to give us use of their facilities, and to support our learning activities!
Big Springs: This area has an elevated spring head which is a prime area for environmental exploration and investigation. Students do a variety of activities from measuring dissolved oxygen to tracking animals in the winter.
Governor Dodge State Park: Governor Dodge, one of the state's largest parks, provides a variety of learning environments with its bluffs, valleys, and lakes. Each year the elementary classes go on a hike and nature scavenger hunt to Governor Dodge. Middle school students also went to Governor Dodge to practice their bird identification skills as a part of our "Taking Flight" program.
