High School Environmental Education
In previous years, high school students participated in the field biology program through environmental science classes and through their Innovative Learning Time (ILT). Currently, a year long "Investigations in Environmental Science" course is offered for high school students.
"Investigations in Environmental Science" takes students through three separate units: Land Use, Energy Generation, and Soils. In each unit, students work in groups to design a related project that is then presented at the end of the unit. In every class students are involved in hands-on activities and in analyzing resources to find the information they need to support their group project. Students are outside for many activities throughout this course, giving them a chance to have real world experience with the concepts learned in the classroom. Students use EcoLogs to record their activity write-ups for each class along with their collected data and observations. This course is significant in that it promotes not only knowledge of environmental science, but also social skills and teamwork skills. |
